Magic Rename — User Manual

Last updated: August 2026 · Covers Magic Rename for macOS and Windows

Nothing changes until you say so. Magic Rename always shows a full preview first, and the whole batch can be undone in one step after it runs.

Choosing what to rename

Pick a whole folder or just the files you want — on this Mac, an external drive, or a synced folder like iCloud Drive, Dropbox, or Google Drive. Magic Rename only ever reads the folder you choose.

How it reads each file

Photos are recognised by what they actually show, videos are sampled frame by frame, and PDFs and documents are read for their real title and subject — not guessed from the existing filename or metadata.

Setting your naming style

Choose the case, separator, and tone you want, along with optional date stamps, sequence numbers, and prefixes — or use a template so an entire shoot or project follows one consistent pattern.

Reviewing before anything changes

Every proposed name appears in a preview before any file is touched. Edit any name by hand, skip the ones you want left alone, then apply the batch.

Undo

A rename can be undone as a whole batch, just as easily as it was applied — there is no need to rename files back one at a time.

Free vs. Pro

Free renames 3 files a month with every feature unlocked, so there is nothing locked behind an upgrade except the monthly count. Pro removes that limit for $4.99/month, with a 7-day free trial. See pricing.
