None of this is required, but it usually saves a round trip:
Please don't send us the files you were renaming. Magic Rename reads them on your own computer and we never receive them — we'd rather keep it that way. A screenshot of the preview list, with anything sensitive covered, is usually enough.
It reads the file. A photo goes through image recognition, a scan or screenshot through OCR, a PDF through its embedded text layer, a Word or Excel document through the text inside it, and a video through its metadata. What comes out of that is turned into a short descriptive name in the style you picked. On machines with on-device AI — Apple Intelligence on a supported Mac, or a Copilot+ PC on Windows — a local language model writes the phrasing; everywhere else a deterministic namer does, and the app works exactly the same.
All of it happens on your machine. No file, no file name, and no extracted text is ever uploaded, and there is no server that could receive them.
Nothing is renamed until you say so — that is what the preview is for. Edit any proposed name in place before applying, or uncheck the row to leave that file alone. If a whole batch reads badly, try a different tone or a shorter name length in Options: a “descriptive” run on a folder of near-identical photos will repeat itself, where “minimal” plus numbering usually will not. Files the app cannot read anything useful out of — an empty document, a scan with no legible text — fall back to their metadata rather than inventing something.
Click Undo Last Rename. It restores every original name from the batch you just applied, in one step. The undo record lives with the app, so it survives closing the window but not moving or renaming the files again by other means — if something else has touched a file in the meantime, Magic Rename tells you which ones it could not put back rather than guessing.
Everything. There is no locked feature, no watermark, and no ads — the free tier renames 3 files per calendar month, and the counter resets on the 1st. Magic Rename Pro is $4.99 per month and removes the limit. Previewing, analyzing, and undoing are always free and unlimited; only applying a rename counts.

Either way it is one subscription on one account. Buy it on your Mac and sign in on your PC and Pro is already there, and the other way round.
Choose Restore Purchases in the app, and make sure you are signed in with the same account you bought with — a purchase belongs to the account, not to the machine. On a Mac, also confirm you are using the same Apple Account that made the purchase. You can see what your account currently holds on the account page. If it still does not unlock, email us the receipt and we will sort it out.
Cancelling is handled by whoever took the payment:
Pro keeps working until the end of the period you have already paid for, and then the app returns to the free tier. Nothing is deleted and no file is touched when a subscription ends.
Only to buy Pro or to carry it to another machine. Renaming — including the free monthly allowance — works with no account and with no internet connection at all. The app contacts the network for exactly two things: signing you in, and asking whether your subscription is active.
Email [email protected] from the address on the account, with the subject “Delete Magic Rename account”, and we delete the account record and its subscription status within 30 days.
There is very little to delete: the account holds your email address and whether Pro is active. Your files, their names, and everything Magic Rename read out of them only ever existed on your own computer, so they were never ours to delete. Deleting the account does not cancel a subscription bought through the Mac App Store — cancel that under Subscriptions first, or it will keep renewing.
